How to Keep Berries Fresher for Longer

Red basket of fresh blueberries

Berries are the first thing to spoil in most shopping baskets — but with three small habits they easily last a week.

Give berries a quick bath in one part vinegar to three parts water as soon as you get home, then rinse and dry them completely on a clean towel. The vinegar kills the mold spores that turn a whole punnet fuzzy overnight, and you won't taste it at all.

Store them in a breathable container lined with a dry paper towel, in the coldest part of the fridge — not the door. Wash only what you're about to eat; moisture is the enemy until serving time.

Freeze the surplus: spread dry berries in a single layer on a tray, freeze solid, then bag them. They pour out one handful at a time for smoothies and baking all winter.
