The 8-Spice Shelf Reset
Ground spices fade after about a year. Here's how to test yours and the only eight most kitchens need.
Test before you toss: crush a pinch in your palm and smell. If the aroma is faint, the flavor is gone — replace it. Whole spices like cinnamon sticks, cloves, and peppercorns last two to three times longer than ground, so buy whole and grind small batches.
The essential eight: black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, oregano, cumin, paprika, and turmeric. With those you can season everything from morning chai to Sunday roast without a cluttered shelf.
Store spices away from the stove in airtight jars, and date the lid with a marker when you open them. Your future self will thank you at every meal.
